ਲਗਾਂ ਮਾਤਰਾਂ · Vowel Signs (Lagaan Maatraan)
Every Gurmukhi consonant carries a short 'a' sound by default. To change that vowel, a small sign (maatraa) is attached above, below, before or after the letter. There are ten vowel sounds in all, including the unmarked one.

Other signs
- ਂਬਿੰਦੀ BindeeNasalises the vowel (adds an 'n' sound through the nose). Used with the vowel signs that are written above or after the letter: ਕੰਨਾ, ਬਿਹਾਰੀ, ਲਾਂਵ, ਦੁਲਾਂਵ, ਹੋੜਾ, ਕਨੌੜਾ, and with the bearer forms ਉ and ਊ.{'pa': 'ਮੈਂ', 'roman': 'main', 'en': 'I'} · {'pa': 'ਗਾਂ', 'roman': 'gaan', 'en': 'cow'} · {'pa': 'ਨਹੀਂ', 'roman': 'naheen', 'en': 'no, not'} · {'pa': 'ਕਿਉਂ', 'roman': 'kiun', 'en': 'why'}
- ੰਟਿੱਪੀ TippeeAlso nasalises, and before a consonant it sounds like n or m. Used with ਮੁਕਤਾ, ਸਿਹਾਰੀ, ਔਂਕੜ and ਦੁਲੈਂਕੜ (the short vowels plus oo) on consonants, and on the bearer forms ਅ and ਇ.{'pa': 'ਪੰਜ', 'roman': 'panj', 'en': 'five'} · {'pa': 'ਸਿੰਘ', 'roman': 'singh', 'en': 'Singh (lion)'} · {'pa': 'ਕੰਮ', 'roman': 'kamm', 'en': 'work'} · {'pa': 'ਅੰਬ', 'roman': 'amb', 'en': 'mango'}
- ੱਅੱਧਕ AddhakDoubles (lengthens) the consonant that follows it. It is written above the letter before the doubled sound.{'pa': 'ਸੱਚ', 'roman': 'sachch', 'en': 'truth'} · {'pa': 'ਇੱਕ', 'roman': 'ikk', 'en': 'one'} · {'pa': 'ਪੱਕਾ', 'roman': 'pakkaa', 'en': 'firm, ripe'} · {'pa': 'ਹੱਥ', 'roman': 'hatth', 'en': 'hand'}
- ਃਵਿਸਰਗ VisargRare. Two dots after a letter, marking a light 'h' breath in words of Sanskrit origin. Seen in Gurbani and older texts; in modern Punjabi such words are usually respelled (ਦੁਃਖ becomes ਦੁੱਖ).{'pa': 'ਦੁਃਖ', 'roman': 'duhkh', 'en': 'sorrow, pain'} · {'pa': 'ਨਿਃਸ਼ਬਦ', 'roman': 'nihshabad', 'en': 'silent, wordless'}
Subscript (pairin) letters ਪੈਰੀਂ ਅੱਖਰ

Rules to remember
- ੳ takes only the three 'u/o' signs: ਔਂਕੜ, ਦੁਲੈਂਕੜ and ਹੋੜਾ (ਉ ਊ ਓ). It is never written with a ਕੰਨਾ, ਸਿਹਾਰੀ or ਬਿਹਾਰੀ.
Together the three bearers cover all ten vowel sounds exactly once.
- ਸਿਹਾਰੀ is the only sign written before the letter it belongs to, even though it is pronounced after it: ਦਿਨ is d-i-n, not i-d-n.
Exception: the bearer forms ਉ and ਊ take ਬਿੰਦੀ (ਉਂ ਊਂ), while ਅ and ਇ take ਟਿੱਪੀ (ਅੰ ਇੰ).
- ਅੱਧਕ (ੱ) sits on the letter before the doubled consonant and is only used with ਮੁਕਤਾ, ਸਿਹਾਰੀ, ਔਂਕੜ or ਦੁਲੈਂਕੜ on that letter: ਪੱਕਾ, ਦਿੱਲੀ, ਪੁੱਤ.
- Only one vowel sign can be attached to a letter. If a word has two vowel sounds in a row, the second one is written on a vowel bearer: ਆਈ (aa-ee, she came), ਗਾਉਣਾ (gaa-u-naa, to sing).
