Numbers in Gurbani
Sri Guru Granth Sahib uses Gurmukhi digits throughout. The 1430 pages are called Angs and are numbered ੧ to ੧੪੩੦, and the end of each stanza is marked with a numeral between double bars, such as ॥ , ॥ and ॥ . The very first symbol of the Granth, ੴ (Ik Oankar, 'One Creator'), begins with the digit ੧ (one) joined to ਓ, so learning the digit ੧ is the first step in reading Gurbani.
- Learn the tens first: Every other number is a unit word blended onto one of these.
- The number just below each ten starts with The exception is 99, ਨੜਿਨਵੇਂ.
- Each decade has its own ending: -ਤਾਲੀ for the 40s, -ਵੰਜਾ for the 50s, -ਹਠ for the 60s, -ਹੱਤਰ for the 70s, -ਆਸੀ for the 80s and -ਨਵੇਂ for the 90s. Spot the ending and you know the decade.
- Above 100, numbers are simply stacked: (5000). Punjabi counts in lakhs and crores rather than millions: ਦਸ ਲੱਖ is one million.
