ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
salok mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਦੁਇ ਦੀਵੇ ਚਉਦਹ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥
dhui dheeve chaudheh haTanaale ||
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
jete jeea tete vanajaare ||
ਖੁਲੑੇ ਹਟ ਹੋਆ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥
khul(h)e haT hoaa vaapaar ||
ਜੋ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਸੋ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
jo pahuchai so chalanahaar ||
ਧਰਮੁ ਦਲਾਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
dharam dhalaal paae neesaan ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naanak naam laahaa paravaan ||
ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ਵਜੀ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥
ghar aae vajee vaadhaiee ||
ਸਚ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
sach naam kee milee vaddiaaiee ||1||

mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਰਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਕਾਲੀਆ ਸੁਪੇਦਾ ਸੇ ਵੰਨ ॥
raatee hovan kaaleeaa supedhaa se va(n)n ||
ਦਿਹੁ ਬਗਾ ਤਪੈ ਘਣਾ ਕਾਲਿਆ ਕਾਲੇ ਵੰਨ ॥
dhih bagaa tapai ghanaa kaaliaa kaale va(n)n ||
ਅੰਧੇ ਅਕਲੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
a(n)dhe akalee baahare moorakh a(n)dh giaan ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
naanak nadharee baahare kabeh na paaveh maan ||2||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਆਪੇ ॥
kaiaa koT rachaiaa har sachai aape ||
ਇਕਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥
eik dhoojai bhai khuaaian haumai vich viaape ||
ਇਹੁ ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਸਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥
eih maanas janam dhula(n)bh saa manmukh sa(n)taape ||
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਥਾਪੇ ॥
jis aap bujhaae so bujhasee jis satigur thaape ||
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਰਚਾਇਓਨੁ ਸਭ ਵਰਤੈ ਆਪੇ ॥੧੩॥
sabh jag khel rachaion sabh varatai aape ||13||
English Translation
Shalok, First Mehla:
The two lamps light the fourteen markets.
There are just as many traders as there are living beings.
The shops are open, and trading is going on;
whoever comes there, is bound to depart.
The Righteous Judge of Dharma is the broker, who gives his sign of approval.
O Nanak, those who earn the profit of the Naam are accepted and approved.
And when they return home, they are greeted with cheers;
they obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||
First Mehla:
Even when the night is dark, whatever is white retains its white color.
And even when the light of day is dazzlingly bright, whatever is black retains its black color.
The blind fools have no wisdom at all; their understanding is blind.
O Nanak, without the Lord's Grace, they will never receive honor. ||2||
Pauree:
The True Lord Himself created the body-fortress.
Some are ruined through the love of duality, engrossed in egotism.
This human body is so difficult to obtain; the self-willed manmukhs suffer in pain.
He alone understands, whom the Lord Himself causes to understand; he is blessed by the True Guru.
He created the entire world for His play; He is pervading amongst all. ||13||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਸਲੋਕ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਜਗਤ-ਰੂਪ ਸ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਚੰਦ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਜ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਦੋ ਲੈਂਪ ਜਗ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਚੌਦਾਂ ਲੋਕ (ਇਹ ਜਗਤ-ਸ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਬਜ਼ਾਰ ਹਨ,
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਸ਼ਹਰ ਦੇ) ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹਨ ।
ਜਦੋਂ ਹੱਟ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਪਏ (ਜਗਤ-ਰਚਨਾ ਹੋਈ), ਵਪਾਰ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ।
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਏਥੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮੁਸਾਫ਼ਿਰ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਧਰਮ-ਰੂਪ ਦਲਾਲ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ ਲਾਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਖਰਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਖੋਟਾ),
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਸ਼ਾਹ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੱਟ ਤੇ) ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਜੋ (ਇਹ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਲੀ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ (ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦੀ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ।੧।
ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਰਾਤਾਂ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਪਰ) ਚਿੱਟੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਹੀ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਰੰਗ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਰਾਤ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ),
ਦਿਨ ਚਿੱਟਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਚੰਗਾ ਤਕੜਾ ਚਮਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਦਾ ਅਸਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ) ।
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਕਲ-ਹੀਣ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ (‘ਨਾਮ’ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ।੨।
ਪਉੜੀ।
ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-ਸਰੀਰ (ਮਾਨੋ,) ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਕਈ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਵਿਚਾਰੇ) ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ ।
ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਬੜੀ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਨਾਲ ਲੱਭਾ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ;
ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਥਾਪਣਾ ਦੇਵੇ ।
ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਖੇਡ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ ।੧੩।
