ਬੋਲਿ ਸੁਧਰਮੀੜਿਆ ਮੋਨਿ ਕਤ ਧਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
bol sudharameeRiaa mon kat dhaaree raam ||
ਤੂ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
too netree dhekh chaliaa maiaa biauhaaree raam ||
ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮਾ ॥
sa(n)g terai kachh na chaalai binaa gobi(n)dh naamaa ||
ਦੇਸ ਵੇਸ ਸੁਵਰਨ ਰੂਪਾ ਸਗਲ ਊਣੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥
dhes ves suvaran roopaa sagal uoone kaamaa ||
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਹਸਤ ਘੋਰਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥

ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

ਰਾਜਨ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਇਆ ਤੂ ਨੀਦ ਭਰੇ ਜਾਗਤ ਕਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
raajan kiau soiaa too needh bhare jaagat kat naahee raam ||
ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੁ ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਹੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
maiaa jhooTh rudhan kete bilalaahee raam ||
ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ॥

ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਉਪਾਵ ਥਾਕੇ ਜਹ ਭਾਵਤ ਤਹ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਮਧਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਆਹੀ ॥

ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮੁ ਸੇ ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

ਨਰਪਤਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਓ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

ਸਰਪਰ ਵੀਛੁੜਣਾ ਮੋਹੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

ਹਰਿਚੰਦਉਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਕਹਾ ਅਸਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
haricha(n)dhauree dhekh bhoolaa kahaa asathit paieeaai ||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਆਨ ਰਚਨਾ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥
bin naam har ke aan rachanaa ahilaa janam gavaieeaai ||
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਹ ਕਾਂਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਗਿਆਨੇ ॥
hau hau karat na tirasan boojhai neh kaa(n)m pooran giaane ||
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਕੇਤਿਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੇ ॥੩॥

ਧਾਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੋ ਅਪਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
dhaar anugraho apanaa kar leenaa raam ||
ਭੁਜਾ ਗਹਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੀਓ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ਦੀਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
bhujaa geh kaadd leeo saadhoo sa(n)g dheenaa raam ||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਸਗਲ ਕਲਮਲ ਦੁਖ ਜਲੇ ॥
saadhasa(n)gam har araadhe sagal kalamal dhukh jale ||
ਮਹਾ ਧਰਮ ਸੁਦਾਨ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਸੇ ਚਲੇ ॥
mahaa dharam sudhaan kiriaa sa(n)g terai se chale ||
ਰਸਨਾ ਅਰਾਧੈ ਏਕੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ॥
rasanaa araadhai ek suaamee har naam man tan bheenaa ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਬੀਨਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੯॥
naanak jis no har milaae so sarab gun parabeenaa ||4||6||9||
English Translation
BIHAAGRAA, FIFTH MEHL, CHHANT:
O you of righteous faith, chant the Lord’s Name; why do you remain silent? with your eyes, you have seen the treacherous ways of Maya. Nothing shall go along with you, except the Name of the Lord of the Universe. Land and clothes, gold and silver — all of these things are useless. Children, spouse and worldly honors, elephants, horses and other corrupting influences shall not go with you. Prays Nanak, without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the whole world is false. || 1 ||
O king, why are you asleep? Why don’t you wake up to reality? It is useless to cry and whine about Maya, but so many weep and wail. So many weep and wail for Maya, the great enticer, but without the Name of the Lord, there is no peace. Thousands of clever tricks and efforts will not succeed. They go wherever the Lord wills them to go. In the beginning, in the end, and in the middle, He is all-pervading everywhere; He is in each and every heart. Prays Nanak, those who join the Saadh Sangat go to the house of the Lord with honor. || 2 ||
O king of the people, you know your palaces and wise servants? You shall certainly have to separate from them; your attachment to them will cause you to regret. Beholding the phantom city, you have gone astray; how can you find stability now? Absorbed in things other than the Name of the Lord, this human life is wasted in vain. Indulging in egotistical actions, your thirst is not quenched. Your desires are not fulfilled, and you do not attain spiritual wisdom. Prays Nanak, without the Name of the Lord, many have departed with regret. || 3 ||
Showering His blessings, the Lord has made me His own. Grasping my arm, He has pulled me out of the mud, and blessed me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. Worshipping the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, all my sins and sufferings are burnt away. This is the greatest religion, and the best act of charity; this alone shall go along with you. My tongue chants in adoration the Name of the One Lord and Master; my mind and body are drenched in the Lord’s Name. O Nanak, whoever the Lord unites with Himself, is filled with all virtues. || 4 || 6 || 9 ||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਹੇ (ਸਾਰੀਆਂ) ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਉੱਤਮ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ ਵਾਲੇ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਕਰ । (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਵੱਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ? ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ) ਵੇਖ; (ਨਿਰਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਇਥੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ । ਦੇਸਾਂ (ਦੇ ਰਾਜ), ਕੱਪੜੇ, ਸੋਨਾ, ਚਾਂਦੀ (—ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ) ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪੁੱਤਰ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ—ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ । ਹਾਥੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਭੀ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਉੱਦਮ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ ਸੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ? ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ? ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਝੂਠਾ ਰੋਣ-ਕੁਰਲਾਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ । ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਡਾਢੀ ਮਨ-ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਤਰਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਿਲੇ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲੇ, ਪਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਾ । ਜੀਵ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਚਤੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਹੀਲੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਥੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ । ਹੋਵੇ ਭੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ?) ਜਿਧਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ । ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ । ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੨।
(ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਰਾਜਾ (ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ) ਸਿਆਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਜਾਣ ਕੇ (ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਪਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਵਿਛੁੜ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਫਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਆਲੀ ਸ਼ਹਰ ਵਰਗੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਥੇ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ, ਜਗਤ-ਚਰਨਾ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ।੩।
“ਮੈਂ (ਵੱਡਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ), ਮੈਂ (ਵੱਡ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ)”—ਇਹ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਦੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ । ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।੩।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ (ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੱਢ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਮ-ਜਪਣ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ—ਅਤੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਾਨ—ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਨ—ਇਹੀ ਕੰਮ (ਜਗਤ ਤੋਂ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਰੋ-ਤਰ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।੬।੯।
