ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
aavan jaanaa kiau rahai kiau melaa hoiee ||
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਨਿਤ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੋਈ ॥੧॥
janam maran kaa dhukh ghano nit sahasaa dhoiee ||1||
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਫਿਟੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
bin naavai kiaa jeevanaa fiT dhirag chaturaiee ||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਵਣੁ ਤਉ ਰਹੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
aavan jaavan tau rahai paieeaai gur pooraa ||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਦੇਇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕੂਰਾ ॥੨॥
raam naam dhan raas dhei binasai bhram kooraa ||2||
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਏ ॥
sa(n)t janaa kau mil rahai dhan dhan jas gaae ||
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
aadh purakh apara(n)paraa gurmukh har paae ||3||
ਨਟੂਐ ਸਾਂਗੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
naTooaai saa(n)g banaiaa baajee sa(n)saaraa ||
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਬਾਜੀ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਉਝਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
khin pal baajee dhekheeaai ujharat nahee baaraa ||4||
ਹਉਮੈ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਖੇਲਣਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
haumai chaupaR khelanaa jhooThe aha(n)kaaraa ||
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਹਾਰੈ ਸੋ ਜਿਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੫॥
sabh jag haarai so jinai gur sabadh veechaaraa ||5||
ਜਿਉ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਹਥਿ ਟੋਹਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥
jiau a(n)dhulai hath Tohanee har naam hamaarai ||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਦਉਤ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੬॥
raam naam har Tek hai nis dhaut savaarai ||6||
ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥
jiau too(n) raakheh tiau rahaa har naam adhaaraa ||
ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੭॥
a(n)t sakhaiee paiaa jan mukat dhuaaraa ||7||
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
janam maran dhukh meTiaa jap naam muraare ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੨੨॥
naanak naam na veesarai pooraa gur taare ||8||22||
English Translation
Aasaa, First Mehla:
How can coming and going, the cycle of reincarnation be ended? And how can one meet the Lord?
The pain of birth and death is so great, in constant skepticism and duality. ||1||
Without the Name, what is life? Cleverness is detestable and cursed.
One who does not serve the Holy True Guru, is not pleased by devotion to the Lord. ||1||Pause||
Coming and going is ended only when one finds the True Guru.
He gives the wealth and capital of the Lord's Name, and false doubt is destroyed. ||2||
Joining the humble Saintly beings, let us sing the blessed, blessed Praises of the Lord.
The Primal Lord, the Infinite, is obtained by the Gurmukh. ||3||
The drama of the world is staged like the show of a buffoon.
For an instant, for a moment, the show is seen, but it disappears in no time at all. ||4||
The game of chance is played on the board of egotism, with the pieces of falsehood and ego.
The whole world loses; he alone wins, who reflects upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||5||
As is the cane in the hand of the blind man, so is the Lord's Name for me.
The Lord's Name is my Support, night and day and morning. ||6||
As You keep me, Lord, I live; the Lord's Name is my only Support.
It is my only comfort in the end; the gate of salvation is found by His humble servants. ||7||
The pain of birth and death is removed, by chanting and meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, is saved by the Perfect Guru. ||8||22||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਆਸਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਭਾਰਾ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ (ਜਿੰਦ ਨੂੰ) ਨਿੱਤ ਸਹਮ (ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ ।੧।
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗੀ, ਜੋ (ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਅਸਲ ਜੀਊਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
(ਜੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਵਿਖਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਉਹ) ਸਿਆਣਪ ਫਿਟਕਾਰਜੋਗ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਚੱਕਰ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਧਨ (ਰੂਪ) ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਝੂਠੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।੨।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੁਕਰ ਸ਼ੁਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਬੇਅੰਤ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੩।
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ) ਮਦਾਰੀ ਨੇ (ਕੋਈ) ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਘੜੀਆਂ ਪਲਾਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਉਹ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ) ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਇਕ) ਖੇਡ (ਹੀ) ਹੈ ।
ਘੜੀ ਪਲ ਇਹ ਖੇਡ ਵੇਖੀਦੀ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਦੇ ਉਜੜਦਿਆਂ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ।੪।
(ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ, ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵਾਂ—ਇਸ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਚਉਪੜ ਦੀ (ਜਗਤ) ਝੂਠ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ (ਦੀਆਂ ਨਰਦਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਖੇਡ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਖੇਡ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ) ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ) ਹਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।
ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਿੱਤਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੫।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਡੰਗੋਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਟੋਹ ਟੋਹ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਰਾਹ-ਖਹਿੜਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਅਸਾਂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਇਕ ਐਸਾ) ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋ) ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨੇ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੬।
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੱਖੇਂ, ਮੈਂ ਉਸੇ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ । (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ) ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਤਕ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਹ ਸਾਥੀ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੭।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੮।੨੨।
