ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
vaddaha(n)s mahalaa teejaa ||
ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਜਰੀ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੋ ਜਰੁ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਆਏ ॥
eih sareer jajaree hai is no jar pahuchai aae ||
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
gur raakhe se ubare hor mar ja(n)mai aavai jaae ||
ਹੋਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

ਐਥੈ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
aaithai kamaavai so fal paavai manmukh hai pat khoiee ||
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਤਿਥੈ ਭੈਣ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥
jam pur ghor a(n)dhaar mahaa gubaar naa tithai bhain na bhaiee ||
ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਜਰੀ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੋ ਜਰੁ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਆਈ ॥੧॥

ਕਾਇਆ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਸਚੜੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
bhram maiaa vichahu kaTeeaai sachaRai naam samaae ||
ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
sachai naam samaae har gun gaae mil preetam sukh paae ||
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹੰਉਮੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
sadhaa ana(n)dh rahai dhin raatee vichahu ha(n)aumai jaae ||
ਜਿਨੀ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਹੰਉ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
jinee purakhee har naam chit laiaa tin kai ha(n)au laagau paae ||
ਕਾਂਇਆ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤਾਂ ਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੨॥

ਸੋ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
so sachaa sach salaaheeaai je satigur dhei bujhaae ||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਸਨਿ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਏ ॥
bin satigur bharam bhulaaneeaa kiaa muh dhesan aagai jaae ||
ਕਿਆ ਦੇਨਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਜਾਏ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਏ ਦੁਖੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
kiaa dhen muh jaae avagun pachhutaae dhukho dhukh kamaae ||
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੀਆ ਸੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਾ ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
naam rateeaa se ra(n)g chaloolaa pir kai a(n)k samaae ||
ਤਿਸੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਾਏ ॥
tis jevadd avar na soojhiee kis aagai kaheeaai jaae ||
ਸੋ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੩॥
so sachaa sach salaaheeaai je satigur dhei bujhaae ||3||
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੜਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਹੰਉ ਤਿਨ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਏ ॥
jinee sachaRaa sach salaahiaa ha(n)au tin laagau paae ||
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮਲੁ ਸਭ ਜਾਏ ॥
se jan sache niramale tin miliaa mal sabh jaae ||
ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮਲੁ ਸਭ ਜਾਏ ਸਚੈ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਏ ਸਚੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
tin miliaa mal sabh jaae sachai sar naae sachai sahaj subhaae ||
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
naam nira(n)jan agam agochar satigur dheeaa bujhaae ||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
anadhin bhagat kareh ra(n)g raate naanak sach samaae ||
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੜਾ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਹੰਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੪॥

English Translation
Wadahans, Third Mehla:
This body is frail; old age is overtaking it.
Those who are protected by the Guru are saved, while others die, to be reincarnated; they continue coming and going.
Others die, to be reincarnated; they continue coming and going, and in the end, they depart regretfully. Without the Name, there is no peace.
As one acts here, so does he obtain his rewards; the self-willed manmukh loses his honor.
In the City of Death, there is pitch darkness, and huge clouds of dust; neither sister nor brother is there.
This body is frail; old age is overtaking it. ||1||
The body becomes like gold, when the True Guru unites one with Himself.
Doubt and Maya have been removed from within me, and I am merged in the Naam, the True Name of the Lord.
Merged in the True Name of the Lord, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; meeting my Beloved, I have found peace.
I am in constant bliss, day and night; egotism has been dispelled from within me.
I fall at the feet of those who enshrine the Naam within their consciousness.
The body becomes like gold, when the True Guru unites one with Himself. ||2||
We truly praise the True Lord, when the True Guru imparts understanding.
Without the True Guru, they are deluded by doubt; going to the world hereafter, what face will they display?
What face will they show, when they go there? They will regret and repent for their sins; their actions will bring them only pain and suffering.
Those who are imbued with the Naam are dyed in the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love; they merge into the Being of their Husband Lord.
I can conceive of no other as great as the Lord; unto whom should I go and speak?
We truly praise the True Lord, when the True Guru imparts understanding. ||3||
I fall at the feet of those who praise the Truest of the True.
Those humble beings are true, and immaculately pure; meeting them, all filth is washed off.
Meeting them, all filth is washed off; bathing in the Pool of Truth, one becomes truthful, with intuitive ease.
The True Guru has given me the realization of the Naam, the Immaculate Name of the Lord, the unfathomable, the imperceptible.
Those who perform devotional worship to the Lord night and day, are imbued with His Love; O Nanak, they are absorbed in the True Lord.
I fall at the feet of those who meditate on the Truest of the True. ||4||4||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਵਡਹੰਸ ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਆ ਦਬਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ, ਉਹ (ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਾਹ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸਰੀਰਕ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੱਥ ਮਲਦੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਕਦੇ) ਸੁਖ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੰੁਦਾ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਫਲ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ । ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਜਮ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ (ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ) ਭੈਣ ਭਰਾ ਉਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਢੇਪਾ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ) ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਤਦੋਂ ਸੋਨੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੰੁਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
(ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਇਸ ਆਨੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
(ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇਹ) ਸਰੀਰ ਤਦੋਂ ਸੋਨੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲ ਦੇ ਦੇਵੇ ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਰਮ-ਸਾਰ ਹੰੁਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਖਾ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਔਗੁਣ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹੇੜਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ (ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ) ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ) ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਅੱਗੇ (ਕੋਈ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ) ਦੱਸਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।
(ਪਰ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦੇਵੇ ।੩।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ।
(ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਕਾਲਖ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਸਿਆਣਪ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਅਪਹੰੁਚ ਹੈ, ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਤਕ ਪਹੰੁਚ ਨਹੀਂ ।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਸੂਝ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਉਹ, ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ ਫੜ ਲਿਆ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੪।੪।
