ਵਡਹੰਸੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
vaddaha(n)s mahalaa teejaa ||
ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
man meriaa too sadhaa sach samaal jeeau ||
ਆਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਤੂ ਸੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਜੀਉ ॥
aapanai ghar too sukh vaseh poh na sakai jamakaal jeeau ||
ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
kaal jaal jam joh na saakai saachai sabadh liv laae ||
ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
sadhaa sach rataa man niramal aavan jaan rahaae ||
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੀ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
dhoojai bhai bharam vigutee manmukh mohee jamakaal ||
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
man meriaa a(n)tar terai nidhaan hai baahar vasat na bhaal ||
ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਭੁੰਚਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥
jo bhaavai so bhu(n)ch too gurmukh nadhar nihaal ||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭ ਬਾਧੀ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥
bin naavai ko chhooTai naahee sabh baadhee jamakaal ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਤੂ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
satigur sevan aapanaa a(n)tar sabadh apaaraa ||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
a(n)tar sabadh apaaraa har naam piaaraa naame nau nidh paiee ||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
manmukh maiaa moh viaape dhookh sa(n)taape dhoojai pat gavaiee ||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥
haumai maar sach sabadh samaane sach rate adhikaiee ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੩॥
naanak maanas janam dhula(n)bh hai satigur boojh bujhaiee ||3||
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
man mere satigur sevan aapanaa se jan vaddabhaagee raam ||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
jo man maareh aapanaa se purakh bairaagee raam ||
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥
se jan bairaagee sach liv laagee aapanaa aap pachhaaniaa ||
ਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਅਤਿ ਗੂੜੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਿਆ ॥
mat nihachal at gooRee gurmukh sahaje naam vakhaaniaa ||
ਇਕ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥
eik kaaman hitakaaree maiaa moh piaaree manmukh soi rahe abhaage ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak sahaje seveh gur apanaa se poore vaddabhaage ||4||3||
English Translation
Wadahans, Third Mehla:
O my mind, contemplate the True Lord forever.
Dwell in peace in the home of your own self, and the Messenger of Death shall not touch you.
The noose of the Messenger of Death shall not touch you, when you embrace love for the True Word of the Shabad.
Ever imbued with the True Lord, the mind becomes immaculate, and its coming and going is ended.
The love of duality and doubt have ruined the self-willed manmukh, who is lured away by the Messenger of Death.
Says Nanak, listen, O my mind: contemplate the True Lord forever. ||1||
O my mind, the treasure is within you; do not search for it on the outside.
Eat only that which is pleasing to the Lord, and as Gurmukh, receive the blessing of His Glance of Grace.
As Gurmukh, receive the blessing of His Glance of Grace, O my mind; the Name of the Lord, your help and support, is within you.
The self-willed manmukhs are blind, and devoid of wisdom; they are ruined by the love of duality.
Without the Name, no one is emancipated. All are bound by the Messenger of Death.
O Nanak, the treasure is within you; do not search for it on the outside. ||2||
O my mind, obtaining the blessing of this human birth, some are engaged in the trade of Truth.
They serve their True Guru, and the Infinite Word of the Shabad resounds within them.
Within them is the Infinite Shabad, and the Beloved Naam, the Name of the Lord; through the Naam, the nine treasures are obtained.
The self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya; they suffer in pain, and through duality, they lose their honor.
But those who conquer their ego, and merge in the True Shabad, are totally imbued with Truth.
O Nanak, it is so difficult to obtain this human life; the True Guru imparts this understanding. ||3||
O my mind, those who serve their True Guru are the most fortunate beings.
Those who conquer their minds are beings of renunciation and detachment.
They are beings of renunciation and detachment, who lovingly focus their consciousness on the True Lord; they realize and understand their own selves.
Their intellect is steady, deep and profound; as Gurmukh, they naturally chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
Some are lovers of beautiful young women; emotional attachment to Maya is very dear to them. The unfortunate self-willed manmukhs remain asleep.
O Nanak, those who intuitively serve their Guru, have perfect destiny. ||4||3||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਵਡਹੰਸ ਤੀਜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ
(ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕੇਗੀ ।
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ, ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੌਤ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) ਉਸ ਵਲ ਤੱਕ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਪਰ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
(ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ) ਸੁਣ, ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਈ ਰੱਖ ।੧।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਢੂੰਢਦਾ ਫਿਰ ।
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾ, ਤੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ, ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ-ਮਿੱਤਰ (ਲੱਭ ਪਏਗਾ) ।
ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ, ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ) ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ (ਇਸ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ।
(ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ (ਜੰਗਲ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਢੂੰਢਦਾ ਫਿਰ ।੨।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਕਈ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਐਸੇ) ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਇਹ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਨੌ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਲੱਭ ਲਏ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਪਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿਚ (ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ) ਵਿਆਕੁਲ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਬੜੀ ਔਖਿਆਈ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਪੇ੍ਰਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ) ਬਹੁਤ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੇਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ-ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਨਿਰਮੋਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਿਰਕਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਸਦਾ) ਪੜਤਾਲਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਗੂੜ੍ਹੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
(ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਮਨ!) ਕਈ ਐਸੇ ਬਦ-ਨਸੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ (ਕਾਮ-ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ) ਹਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ (ਗ਼ਫ਼ਲਤ ਦੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁੱਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ—) ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੪।੩।
