ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਅਨਹਦੋ ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
anahadho anahadh vaajai run jhunakaare raam ||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਲਾਲ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
meraa mano meraa man raataa laal piaare raam ||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੁੰਨ ਮੰਡਲਿ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
anadhin raataa man bairaagee su(n)n ma(n)ddal ghar paiaa ||
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥
aadh purakh apara(n)par piaaraa satigur alakh lakhaiaa ||
ਆਸਣਿ ਬੈਸਣਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
aasan baisan thir naarain tit man raataa veechaare ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

ਤਿਤੁ ਅਗਮ ਤਿਤੁ ਅਗਮ ਪੁਰੇ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥
tit agam tit agam pure kahu kit bidh jaieeaai raam ||
ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਸਾਰਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਰਾਮ ॥
sach sa(n)jamo saar gunaa gur sabadh kamaieeaai raam ||
ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
sach sabadh kamaieeaai nij ghar jaieeaai paieeaai gunee nidhaanaa ||
ਤਿਤੁ ਸਾਖਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਡਾਲੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਭਨਾ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥
tit saakhaa mool pat nahee ddaalee sir sabhanaa paradhaanaa ||
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਥਾਕੀ ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
jap tap kar kar sa(n)jam thaakee haTh nigreh nahee paieeaai ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੋ ਰਤਨਾਗਰੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਰਤਨ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

ਕਰਿ ਮਜਨੋ ਸਪਤ ਸਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ॥
kar majano sapat sare man niramal mere raam ||
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲਿ ਨੑਾਏ ਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਏ ਪੰਚ ਮਿਲੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
niramal jal n(h)aae jaa prabh bhaae pa(n)ch mile veechaare ||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਤਜਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kaam karodh kapaT bikhiaa taj sach naam ur dhaare ||
ਹਉਮੈ ਲੋਭ ਲਹਰਿ ਲਬ ਥਾਕੇ ਪਾਏ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥
haumai lobh lahar lab thaake paae dheen dhiaalaa ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
naanak gur samaan teerath nahee koiee saache gur gopaalaa ||3||
ਹਉ ਬਨੁ ਬਨੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਰਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਬਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
hau ban bano dhekh rahee tiran dhekh sabaiaa raam ||
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੋ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
tirabhavano tujheh keeaa sabh jagat sabaiaa raam ||
ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੀਆ ਤੂੰ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
teraa sabh keeaa too(n) thir theeaa tudh samaan ko naahee ||
ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
too(n) dhaataa sabh jaachik tere tudh bin kis saalaahee ||
ਅਣਮੰਗਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਦਾਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
anama(n)giaa dhaan dheejai dhaate teree bhagat bhare bha(n)ddaaraa ||
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੨॥
raam naam bin mukat na hoiee naanak kahai veechaaraa ||4||2||
English Translation
AASAA, FIRST MEHL:
The unstruck melody of the sound current resounds with the vibrations of the celestial instruments. My mind, my mind is imbued with the Love of my Darling Beloved. Night and day, my detached mind remains absorbed in the Lord, and I obtain my home in the profound trance of the celestial void. The True Guru has revealed to me the Primal Lord, the Infinite, my Beloved, the Unseen. The Lord’s posture and His seat are permanent; my mind is absorbed in reflective contemplation upon Him. O Nanak, the detached ones are imbued with His Name, the unstruck melody, and the celestial vibrations. || 1 ||
Tell me, how can I reach that unreachable, that unreachable city? By practicing truthfulness and self-restraint, by contemplating His Glorious Virtues, and living the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. Practicing the True Word of the Shabad, one comes to the home of his own inner being, and obtains the treasure of virtue. He has no stems, roots, leaves or branches, but He is the Supreme Lord over the heads of all. Practicing intensive meditation, chanting and self-discipline, people have grown weary; stubbornly practicing these rituals, they still have not found Him. O Nanak, through spiritual wisdom, the Lord, the Life of the world, is met; the True Guru imparts this under¬standing. || 2 ||
The Guru is the ocean, the mountain of jewels, overflowing with jewels. Take your bath in the seven seas, O my mind, and become pure. One bathes in the water of purity when it is pleasing to God, and obtains the five virtues by reflective meditation. Renouncing sexual desire, anger, deceit and corruption, he enshrines the True Name in his heart. When the waves of ego, greed and avarice subside, he finds the Lord Master, Merciful to the meek. O Nanak, there is no place of pilgrimage comparable to the Guru; the True Guru is the Lord of the world. || 3 ||
I have searched the jungles and forests, and looked upon all the fields. You created the three worlds, the entire universe, everything. You created everything; You alone are permanent. Nothing is equal to You. You are the Giver — all are Your beggars; without You, who should we praise? You bestow Your gifts, even when we do not ask for them, O Great Giver; devotion to You is a treasure over-flowing. Without the Lord’s Name, there is no liberation; so says Nanak, the meek. || 4 || 2 ||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਘੁੰਘਰੂਆਂ ਝਾਂਜਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਣਕਾਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਵਾਜਾ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਵੱਜ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ । ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਹੁਣ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਉੱਚੇ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਠਦਾ । ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਹਸਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ । ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਸਣ ਉਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਤਖ਼ਤ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੇ) ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ, (ਮਾਨੋ) ਝਾਂਜਰਾਂ ਘੁੰਘਰੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਛਣਕਾਰ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਵਾਜਾ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਵੱਜਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
(ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ!) ਦੱਸ, ਉਸ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ । (ਸਹੇਲੀ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ—ਹੇ ਭੈਣ! ਉਸ ਸ਼ਹਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ, (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ (ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਣਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ) । ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਇਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ (ਸ੍ਵੈ-ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਅੱਪੜ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲੱਭ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ । ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਟਹਣੀਆਂ ਡਾਲੀਆਂ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਪੱਤਰ (ਆਦਿਕ, ਭਾਵ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਚੇ ਜਗਤ) ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਣ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਹੈ ।ਇਹ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਜਪ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤਪ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਾਰ ਗਈ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੇ) ਹਠ ਨਾਲ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਜਤਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦਿੱਤੀ) ਮਤਿ ਨੇ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਸਮਝਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਗੁਰੂ (ਇਕ) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਣ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਿਚ (ਸੁਚੱਜੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ), ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਤਨ ਹਨ । (ਹੇ ਸਹੇਲੀਏ! ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਪੰਜੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਸਮੇਤ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ, ਤੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗਾ ।ਜੀਵ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰੂਪ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ) ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਸਤ, ਸੰਤੋਖ, ਦਇਆ, ਧਰਮ ਤੇ ਧੀਰਜ) ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਖੋਟ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ) ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀਨਾਂ ਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ, ਲੋਭ ਦੀ ਲਹਰ, ਤੇ ਲੱਬ (ਆਦਿਕ) ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।੩।
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੰਗਲ ਵੇਖ ਚੁਕੀ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਰੀ ਬਨਸਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਚੁਕੀ ਹਾਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਤਿੰਨੇ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ । ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਸਵੰਤ ਹੈ, ਪਰ) ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ । ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰੇ (ਦਰ ਦੇ) ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ? ਹੇ ਦਾਤਾਰ! ਤੂੰ ਤਾਂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮੰਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਦੇਹ) ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ ।ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਲੱਭ ਲੋਭ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ।੪।੨।
