ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
aasaa mahalaa panjavaa ||
ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
dhaan dhei kar poojaa karanaa ||
ਲੈਤ ਦੇਤ ਉਨੑ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਰਨਾ ॥
lait dhet un(h) mookar paranaa ||
ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੁਮੑ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
jit dhar tum(h) hai braahaman jaanaa ||
ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
tit dhar too(n)hee hai pachhutaanaa ||1||
ਐਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਡੂਬੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
aaise braahaman ddoobe bhaiee ||
ਨਿਰਾਪਰਾਧ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
niraaparaadh chitaveh buriaaiee ||1|| rahaau ||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਹਲਕਾਏ ॥
a(n)tar lobh fireh halakaae ||
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਏ ॥
ni(n)dhaa kareh sir bhaar uThaae ||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਠਾ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
maiaa mooThaa chetai naahee ||
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
bharame bhoolaa bahutee raahee ||2||
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
baahar bhekh kareh ghanere ||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਉਤਰੀ ਘੇਰੇ ॥
a(n)tar bikhiaa utaree ghere ||
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
avar upadhesai aap na boojhai ||
ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੩॥
aaisaa braahaman kahee na seejhai ||3||
ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਮਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
moorakh baaman prabhoo samaal ||
ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
dhekhat sunat terai hai naal ||
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੀ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
kahu naanak je hovee bhaag ||
ਮਾਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੪॥੮॥
maan chhodd gur charanee laag ||4||8||
English Translation
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:
They give you donations and worship you.
You take from them, and then deny that they have given anything to you.
That door, through which you must ultimately go, O Brahmin
- at that door, you will come to regret and repent. ||1||
Such Brahmins shall drown, O Siblings of Destiny;
they think of doing evil to the innocent. ||1||Pause||
Within them is greed, and they wander around like mad dogs.
They slander others and carry loads of sin upon their heads.
Intoxicated by Maya, they do not think of the Lord.
Deluded by doubt, they wander off on many paths. ||2||
Outwardly, they wear various religious robes,
but within, they are enveloped by poison.
They instruct others, but do not understand themselves.
Such Brahmins will never be emancipated. ||3||
O foolish Brahmin, reflect upon God.
He watches and hears, and is always with you.
Says Nanak, if this is your destiny,
renounce your pride, and grasp the Guru's Feet. ||4||8||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਆਸਾ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਵੇਖੋ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ! ਜਜਮਾਨ ਤਾਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ-ਮਾਨਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪਰ ਉਹ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਭੀ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ ਮੁੱਕਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਤਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ । ਸਗੋਂ ਦਾਨ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਅਸੀ ਜਜਮਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਵਾਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ) ।
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! (ਇਹ ਚੇਤਾ ਰੱਖ) ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਤੂੰ ਪਹੁੰਚਣਾ ਹੈ
ਉਸ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਪਛੁਤਾਵੇਂਗਾ ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਣੋ
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿਦੋਸੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਅਪੜਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਂਞ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਦ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਭ (ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਲੋਭ ਨਾਲ) ਹਲਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਇਹ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮਾਇਆ (ਦੇ ਮੋਹ) ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਲੁਟਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਹ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ (ਇਸ ਪਾਸੇ) ਧਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਈ ਪਾਸੀਂ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
ਬਾਹਰ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਆਗੂ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਕਈ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਭੇਖ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਘੇਰ ਕੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਪਾਈ ਬੈਠੀ ਹੈ
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ) ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ (ਧਰਮ ਦਾ) ਉਪਦੇਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਆਪ (ਉਸ ਧਰਮ ਨੂੰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ,
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ) ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।੩।
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਆਖ—) ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਯਾਦ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ) ਵੇਖਦਾ (ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਗ ਜਾਗਣ ਤਾਂ
(ਆਪਣੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਵਿੱਦਵਤਾ ਦਾ) ਮਾਣ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਉ ।੪।੮।
