goojaree mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਐ ਜੀ ਨਾ ਹਮ ਉਤਮ ਨੀਚ ਨ ਮਧਿਮ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ॥
aai jee naa ham utam neech na madhim har saranaagat har ke log ||
ਨਾਮ ਰਤੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਜੋਗ ਬਿਸਰਜਿਤ ਰੋਗ ॥੧॥
naam rate keval bairaagee sog bijog bisarajit rog ||1||
ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀ ॥

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਬਾਕੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਸਨ ਰਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗੇ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੀ ॥
har gun rasan raveh prabh sa(n)ge jo tis bhaavai sahaj haree ||
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਜਗਿ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਮੇਕ ਘਰੀ ॥੨॥
bin har naam birathaa jag jeevan har bin nihafal mek gharee ||2||
ਐ ਜੀ ਖੋਟੇ ਠਉਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ॥
aai jee khoTe Thaur naahee ghar baahar ni(n)dhak gat nahee kaiee ||
ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਖਸ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਈ ॥੩॥

ਐ ਜੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਈ ॥

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਨਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਖ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਜਿਨੑ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥
ni(n)dhak nar kaale mukh ni(n)dhaa jin(h) gur kee dhaat na bhaiee ||4||
ਐ ਜੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਅਧੂਆ ਰਾਈ ॥
aai jee saran pare prabh bakhas milaavai bilam na adhooaa raiee ||
ਆਨਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਥਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
aanadh mool naath sir naathaa satigur mel milaiee ||5||
ਐ ਜੀ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਿ ਚੁਕਾਈ ॥
aai jee sadhaa dhiaal dhiaa kar raviaa gurmat bhraman chukaiee ||
ਪਾਰਸੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੋਈ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੬॥
paaras bheT ka(n)chan dhaat hoiee satasa(n)gat kee vaddiaaiee ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ਮਜਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
har jal niramal man isanaanee majan satigur bhaiee ||
ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੭॥
punarap janam naahee jan sa(n)gat jotee jot milaiee ||7||
ਤੂੰ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮ ਤਰੋਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਪੰਖੀ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
too(n) vadd purakh aga(n)m tarovar ham pa(n)khee tujh maahee ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੀਜੈ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak naam nira(n)jan dheejai jug jug sabadh salaahee ||8||4||
English Translation
GUJRI, FIRST MEHL:
O Dear One, I am not high or low or in the middle. I am the Lord’s slave, and I seek the Lord’s Sanctuary. Imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I am detached from the world; I have forgotten sorrow, separation and disease. || 1 ||
O Siblings of Destiny, by Guru’s Grace, I perform devotional worship to my Lord and Master. One whose heart is filled with the Hymns of the True Guru, obtains the Pure Lord. He is not under the power of the Messenger of Death, nor does he owe Death anything. || 1 || Pause ||
He chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord with his tongue, and abides with God; he does whatever pleases the Lord. Without the Lord’s Name, life passes in vain in the world, and every moment is useless. || 2 ||
The false have no place of rest, either inside or outside; the slanderer does not find salvation. Even if one is resentful, God does not withhold His blessings; day by day, they increase. || 3 ||
No one can take away the Guru’s gifts; my Lordand Master Himself has given them. The black-faced slanderers, with slander in their mouths, do not appreciate the Guru’s gifts. || 4 ||
God forgives and blends with Himself those who take to His Sanctuary; He does not delay for an instant. He is the source of bliss, the Greatest Lord; through the True Guru, we are united in His Union. || 5 ||
Through His Kindness, the Kind Lord pervades us; through Guru’s Teachings, our wanderings cease. Touching the philosopher’s stone, metal is transformed into gold. Such is the glorious greatness of the Society of the Saints. || 6 ||
The Lord is the immaculate water; the mind is the bather, and the True Guru is the bath attendant, O Siblings of Destiny. That humble being who joins the Sat Sangat shall not be consigned to reincarnation again; his light merges into the Light. || 7 ||
You are the Great Primal Lord, the infinite tree of life; I am a bird perched on Your branches. Grant to Nanak the Immaculate Naam; throughout the ages, he sings the Praises of the Shabad. || 8 || 4 ||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਮਾਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਚਕਾਰਲੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਸਹਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤਿ ਦੇ ਹਾਂ । ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ (ਇਸ ਊਚਤਾ ਨੀਚਤਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਵਲੋਂ) ਨਿਰਮੋਹ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਚਿੰਤਾ, ਵਿਛੋੜਾ, ਰੋਗ ਆਦਿਕ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਭੁਲਾ ਚੁਕੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।੧।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇ ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਬਾਕੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪੈ ਸਕੇ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਭ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਹ ਇਹੀ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਸੁਤੇ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹੀ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੋ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਊਣਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਭੀ ਘੜੀ ਨਿਸਫਲ ਜਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਖੋਟ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ । (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ (ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਖਿੱਝੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਬੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਗੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ।੩।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਦਾਤਿ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ; ਠਾਕੁਰ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ (ਨਾਮ ਦੀ) ਦਾਤਿ ਦਿਵਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੋਈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ (ਤੇ ਉਹ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲੇ (ਦਿੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।੪।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਢਿੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ । ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਨਾਥ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ (ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੫।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ) ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, । ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਲੋਹਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਧਾਤ ਪਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੁਹ ਕੇ ਸੋਨਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਹੈ।੬।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਜੋਗਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਇਸ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ) ਚੁੱਭੀ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੭।
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਅਪਹੁੰਚ ਹੈਂ । ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਇਕ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਸੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੰਛੀ ਹਾਂ । ਹੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ।੮।੪।
