ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥
salok mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਜੇ ਮੋਹਾਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥
je mohaakaa ghar muhai ghar muh pitaree dhei ||
ਅਗੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਚੋਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
agai vasat sin(j)aaneeaai pitaree chor karei ||
ਵਢੀਅਹਿ ਹਥ ਦਲਾਲ ਕੇ ਮੁਸਫੀ ਏਹ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
vadde'eeh hath dhalaal ke musafee eh karei ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿ ਖਟੇ ਘਾਲੇ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥
naanak agai so milai j khaTe ghaale dhei ||1||

ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥
jiau joroo siranaavanee aavai vaaro vaar ||
ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥
jooThe jooThaa mukh vasai nit nit hoi khuaar ||
ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥
sooche eh na aakhe'eeh bahan j pi(n)ddaa dhoi ||
ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

ਤੁਰੇ ਪਲਾਣੇ ਪਉਣ ਵੇਗ ਹਰ ਰੰਗੀ ਹਰਮ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥
ture palaane paun veg har ra(n)gee haram savaariaa ||
ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਲਾਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਸਾਰਿਆ ॥
koThe ma(n)ddap maaReeaa lai baiThe kar paasaariaa ||
ਚੀਜ ਕਰਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
cheej karan man bhaavadhe har bujhan naahee haariaa ||
ਕਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਮਹਲਤਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥
kar furamais khaiaa vekh mahalat maran visaariaa ||
ਜਰੁ ਆਈ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੭॥
jar aaiee joban haariaa ||17||
English Translation
SHALOK, FIRST MEHL:
The thief robs a house, and offers the stolen goods to his ancestors. In the world hereafter, this is recognized, and his ancestors are considered thieves as well. The hands of the go-between are cut off; this is the Lord’s justice. O Nanak, in the world hereafter, that alone is received, which one gives to the needy from his own earnings and labor. || 1 ||
FIRST MEHL: As a woman has her periods, month after month, so does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again. They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies. Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. || 2 ||
PAUREE: With saddled horses, as fast as the wind, and harems decorated in every way; in houses and pavilions and lofty mansions, they dwell, making ostentatious shows. They act out their minds’ desires, but they do not understand the Lord, and so they are ruined. Asserting their authority, they eat, and beholding their mansions, they forget about death. But old age comes, and youth is lost. || 17 ||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਠੱਗ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਘਰ ਠੱਗੇ, ਪਰਾਏ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਕੇ (ਉਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਮਿਤ ਦੇਵੇ, ਤਾਂ (ਜੇ ਸੱਚ-ਮੁੱਚ ਪਿਛਲਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅੱਪੜਦਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਿਞਾਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭੀ) ਚੋਰ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਚੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਲ ਨਿਕਲ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ) । (ਅਗੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ (ਇਹ ਚੋਰੀ ਦਾ ਮਾਲ ਅਪੜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ) ਦਲਾਲ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵੱਢੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਅਪੜਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੀਹ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਹੈ?) ਅਗਾਂਹ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਹੱਥੀਂ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਹ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ), ਤਿਵੇਂ ਝੂਠੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਦੁੱਖੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਅਜੇਹੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਧੋ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਬੈਠ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ । ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਕਾਠੀਆਂ ਸਮੇਤ, (ਭਾਵ, ਸਦਾ ਤਿਆਰ-ਬਰ ਤਿਆਰ) ਘੋੜੇ ਹਵਾ ਵਰਗੀ ਤਿੱਖੀ ਚਾਲ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੋਠੇ ਮਹਲ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਪਸਾਰ ਕੇ (ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਹੋਇ) ਬੈਠੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ-ਮੰਨੀਆਂ ਰੰਗ-ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਛਾਣਦੇ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਹਾਰ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ । ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗ਼ਰੀਬਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ) ਹੁਕਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੌਜਾਂ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ) ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਹਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਕ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਦੇ ਠੱਗਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੁਆਨੀ ਦੇ ਨਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਪਏ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) (ਗ਼ਫ਼ਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ) ਬੁਢੇਪਾ ਆ ਦਬਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧੭।
