ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mahalaa pehilaa ||
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
manasaa maneh samaile bhaujal sach taranaa ||
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥
aadh jugaadh dhiaal too Thaakur teree saranaa ||1||
ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
too dhaatau ham jaachikaa har dharasan dheejai ||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
kooRaa laalach chhoddeeaai tau saach pachhaanai ||
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabadh samaieeaai paramaarath jaanai ||2||
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥
eih man raajaa lobheeaa lubhatau lobhaiee ||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
gurmukh lobh nivaareeaai har siau ban aaiee ||3||
ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kalar khetee beejeeaai kiau laahaa paavai ||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
manmukh sach na bheejiee kooR kooR gaddaavai ||4||
ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
laalach chhoddahu a(n)dhiho laalach dhukh bhaaree ||
ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
saachau saahib man vasai haumai bikh maaree ||5||
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
dhubidhaa chhodd kuvaaTaRee moosahuge bhaiee ||
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥
ahinis naam salaaheeaai satigur saranaiee ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥
manmukh pathar sail hai dhirag jeevan feekaa ||
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥
jal meh ketaa raakheeaai abh a(n)tar sookaa ||7||
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
har kaa naam nidhaan hai poorai gur dheeaa ||
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥

English Translation
AASAA, FIRST MEHL:
Stilling the desires of the mind, the mortal truly crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. In the very beginning, and throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master; I seek Your Sanctuary. || 1 ||
You are the Giver, and I am a mere beggar. Lord, please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; the temple of his mind resounds with joy. || 1 || Pause ||
Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth. So let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and know this supreme realization. || 2 ||
This mind is a greedy king, engrossed in greed. The Gurmukh eliminates his greed, and comes to an understanding with the Lord. || 3 ||
Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit? The self-willed manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. || 4 ||
So renounce greed — you are blind! Greed only brings pain. When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. || 5 ||
Renounce the evil way of duality, or you shall be plundered, O Siblings of Destiny. Day and night, praise the Naam, in the Sanctuary of the True Guru’s protection. || 6 ||
The self-willed manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is cursed and useless. No matter now long a stone is kept under water, it still remains dry at its core. || 7 ||
The Name of the Lord is the treasure; the Perfect Guru has given it to me. O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, churns and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. || 8 || 15 ||
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ (Punjabi Explanation)
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਉਠਦਾ) ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ (ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗਿਆਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ) । ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ । ਹੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਢ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਹੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਪਾਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ । ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ)।੧।
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਅਸੀ ਜੀਵ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਦੇ) ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਾਂ, (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਦਰਸਨ ਦੇਹ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ) ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਭੈੜਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਦੋਂ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।੨।
ਇਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ) ਲੋਭੀ ਮਨ (ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਦਾ) ਰਾਜਾ (ਬਣ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ) ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਸਦਾ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲੋਭ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਲੋਭ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਲੋਭ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।੩।
ਜੇ ਕੱਲਰ ਵਿਚ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ (ਬੀਜਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਉਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੱਟ ਸਕਦਾ । ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ । ਝੂਠ ਝੂਠ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਲਦਾ ਹੈ।੪।
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵੋ! ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਲਚ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵਹੁ । ਲਾਲਚ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸਿਆਂ) ਭਾਰੀ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ । ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਲਾਲਚ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ)।੫।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵਹੁ । ਇਹ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਰਸਤਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾਵੋਗੇ । (ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।੬।
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ) ਪੱਥਰ ਹੈ ਚਟਾਨ ਹੈ (ਪੱਥਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਚਟਾਨ ਵਾਂਗ ਕੁਰਖ਼ਤ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬੇ-ਸੁਆਦ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ । ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਏ, ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਸੁੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸਤਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦ੍ਰਵਦਾ)।੭।
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਸਾਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਦਾ ਜਪ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਦੇ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।੮।੧੫।
